Controversy Surrounding Minecraft Servers
Currently, there is a new controversy surrounding the game of Minecraft, and it has to do with the servers and specifically those that feature firearms or firearm models. A great example of this is Grand Theft Minecraft, which is essentially a version of Grand Theft Auto in Minecraft. However, there are also massive servers like Hypixel that feature games with firearms present. These servers are now being forced to remove any presence of firearms on their servers or risk being banned from the official Minecraft servers.
When a server is banned, no official Minecraft account can connect to it. This means that it is truly banned, and the only way to connect is with a cracked account.
This controversy began when Grand Theft Minecraft posted an email they had received from a team at Mojang, the group responsible for finding servers that do not comply with Minecraft’s terms of use and warning them that they must change certain things or risk being banned. Grand Theft Minecraft had already had dealings with this team in the past because they had literally had a casino in the game and apparently you could use real money in this casino, making it very illegal, even from a legal standpoint in some countries.

This has been a problem in the past, and the team at Mode Junk had previously received emails about it. However, the emails never mentioned firearms, and each time the team had corrected any issues with the casino, they had been told the server could be put back online.

The email was in English, but it can be summarised as follows: the team at Mojang, who regulate the servers, already knew about this particular server as they had previously been in contact with them. The email stated that the server did not comply with the conditions of use for Mode Junk and Minecraft. The reason given was that a recent directive from the leadership team at Mojang considered that firearms were not allowed.
It is clear that European countries have restrictions on video games, and that firearms are not allowed as they are considered adult content. The other problem with all of this is that I looked at the conditions of use, read them over and over again, and tried to search for keywords that might lead me to something I missed. I found nothing in relation to firearms being banned from the game. This means that Mojang hasn’t changed their conditions of use to change the way they interpret them. This means that even if you follow the conditions of use as they are now, they could change the way they interpret them and decide that something else is a different aspect.

The game you have implemented yourself via modes and all is now forbidden. The last point that makes it even more ridiculous, in my opinion, is that these servers could just change the model of the weapons and you have games that are already like this. On other servers, people have gardening tools that shoot fuses to beat their opponents. Technically, this is a weapon, but according to these new rules, it is not a firearm and it does not exist in real life, so it would not be banned according to these new interpretations of the rules of use. This makes it just stupid because it is basically a weapon and it has not changed the nature of the game, you have just changed a model.
For me, this change of interpretation clearly comes from Microsoft because it is a very puritan thing. Americans are hyper-conservative, you cannot talk about firearms, but it is present everywhere in their culture. It is even more ridiculous, for example, you cannot drink alcohol in public in the United States, you have to put it in a brown bag. But that means that if you see someone drinking something in a brown bag, you know what it is. So it’s just stupid and it’s exactly the same thing here. People will just put brown bags on the weapons, they will change the model of an AK 47 to a gardening tool or anything else. It could be anything.
